The Anointing Woman: A Morning of Reflection with Merle Marie Troeger

You might be surprised to learn that not every Gospel tells a story of Jesus’ birth and not every Gospel gives an account of His resurrection. But every Gospel contains a report of the woman who breaks into a dinner party to anoint Jesus with expensive perfumed oil. She shows up in all four Gospels with an act of astonishing intimacy and generosity.

Why not spend some time during Lent with this fascinating woman? She has the power to teach us about fidelity, courage, intimacy, and extravagance.

During this Quiet Morning, treat yourself to some uninterrupted peace and serenity as you ponder what compelled this woman to crash a fancy dinner party to anoint Jesus. What is her back story? Why do this now? Why here? What happens to her afterwards? We’ll consider her powerful story in scripture, poetry and art.

Whether you are a man or a woman, you may very well identify with this woman who takes a remarkable and shocking action to anoint Jesus. Have you ever taken such a bold step you surprised even yourself? Was there a time you acted out of a strong feeling of love or anguish – or both? Have you had a decisive encounter with someone that has changed your life? During our Quiet Morning we’ll reflect on her story – and yours!
